Microsoft today unveiled a dramatically overhauled Bing search engine and Edge browser, both infused with a next-generation OpenAI large language model that the company says is ‘more powerful than ChatGPT’ and customized specifically for search. The new Bing, available now in a limited desktop preview at Bing.com, goes beyond traditional search to deliver complete answers, a new chat experience, and content generation capabilities — what Microsoft calls an ‘AI copilot for the web.’

CEO Satya Nadella said that AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search. The update uses a proprietary Microsoft approach Microsoft calls the Prometheus model, which works with the new OpenAI model to produce more relevant, timely results. Microsoft also applied the AI to its core search ranking engine, claiming the largest leap in relevance in two decades.

The new Bing is available today in a limited preview on desktop, and everyone can visit Bing.com today to try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. We’re going to scale the preview to millions in the coming weeks.
