Microsoft delays Recall release, makes feature opt-in after security concerns

Facing mounting security concerns over its AI-powered screenshot search feature, Microsoft pulls Recall from next week's Copilot+ PC launch and shifts it to a Windows Insider preview, requiring Windows Hello enrollment and adding just-in-time decryption.

Microsoft today announced an abrupt delay for its flagship Recall feature on Copilot+ PCs, originally scheduled for broad release on June 18. The AI-powered screenshot search tool will now debut as a Windows Insider preview ‘in the coming weeks’ after Microsoft said it is adding more security safeguards and moving Recall to the Windows Insider Program in the coming weeks.

‘We have heard a clear signal that we can make it easier for people to choose to enable Recall and improve privacy and security safeguards,’ wrote Pavan Davuluri, executive vice president of Windows + Devices, in an updated blog post. Effective immediately, Recall will be off by default on new Copilot+ PCs, and users must opt in via a Windows Hello enrollment. Additional protections include ‘just in time’ decryption requiring proof of presence and encryption of the search index database. Windows Hello enrollment is required to enable Recall, proof of presence is also required to view your timeline and search in Recall, and just in time decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-In Security (ESS) so Recall snapshots will only be decrypted and accessible when the user authenticates.

Recall eventually returned as an optional Windows Insider feature in late 2024, but the controversy permanently tarnished Microsoft's AI ambitions on Windows. The incident became a textbook case of shipping an AI feature without adequate security review, and influenced enterprise adoption of on-device AI logging features.
