Andrej Karpathy today announced Eureka Labs, an AI+education company that aims to build a ‘new kind of school that is AI native.’ The company’s first product will be LLM101n, an undergraduate-level course in which students train their own AI, mirroring the very AI teaching assistant that will help guide them.

Karpathy, who has focused on both AI and education for roughly two decades, described the effort as the culmination of that passion. ‘The teacher still designs the course materials, but they are supported, leveraged and scaled with an AI Teaching Assistant who is optimized to help guide the students through them,’ he wrote in the announcement. The model evokes a student working through physics materials alongside a patient, infinite Feynman — an ideal Karpathy acknowledges is scarce for 8 billion people.

Eureka Labs plans to offer both digital and physical cohorts. For now, Karpathy says the team is ‘heads down building LLM101n,’ with course materials available online. The announcement arrived with characteristic Karpathy candor: ‘It’s still early days but I wanted to announce the company so that I can build publicly instead of keeping a secret that isn’t.’
