Google's NotebookLM adds Audio Overview, generating AI conversations from your documents

A new feature turns uploaded sources into a lively, AI-generated conversation between two synthetic hosts, making the research tool feel like a podcast studio in your browser.

Google Labs today released Audio Overview, a new NotebookLM feature that generates a synthetic podcast-style conversation based on a user’s uploaded documents. Two AI hosts summarize the material, make connections across sources, and banter back and forth. The audio can be downloaded for offline listening.

The feature builds on NotebookLM’s existing capabilities, which let users upload sources and then ask questions of an AI expert grounded in that material. Audio Overview is experimental: it can take minutes to generate, currently only speaks English, and the hosts sometimes introduce inaccuracies. Users cannot interrupt them mid-conversation. Still, the effect is startlingly natural.

Google says the feature is still experimental and can take several minutes to generate for large notebooks.

Audio Overviews became a viral hit over the following weeks, with users sharing clips of the hosts discovering they were AI or bantering over trivial documents. It was widely seen as Google's most innovative and culturally resonant AI product of the year.
