The tool, dubbed the ‘DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool,’ has analyzed roughly 200,000 federal regulations and flagged about 100,000 as ‘not required by law,’ with a stated goal of eliminating half of all regulations by January 20, 2026 — the first anniversary of President Trump’s second inauguration. The presentation claims the tool was already used to review 1,083 regulatory sections at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and to write ‘100% of deregulations’ at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
The White House said no final plan has been approved but praised the DOGE team. HUD staffers confirmed to the Post that the tool made errors, misreading legal language in several instances. The Post reports that staffers will review proposed deletions before any plan is finalized, and agencies face a September 1 deadline to prepare their own deregulation lists.

Its methods outlived it, though: a July 2026 Washington Post investigation found DOGE's AI tools and staff had scattered into agencies across the government, even as courts and administrative-law requirements limited how far AI-generated repeals could actually go.
