GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke is leaving the company at the end of 2025 to start a new venture, and Microsoft isn’t immediately naming a replacement. Instead, GitHub will be folded into Microsoft’s CoreAI division, led by former Meta engineering chief Jay Parikh. Three top GitHub executives—Vladimir Fedorov, Kyle Daigle, and Elizabeth Pemmerl—will report to Microsoft’s Julia Liuson.

Dohmke announced the news in a blog post and internal memo Monday, saying his “startup roots have begun tugging” and that he’s “decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again.” He joined Microsoft in 2015 through his startup HockeyApp and became GitHub CEO in 2021, succeeding Nat Friedman. Under Dohmke, GitHub’s user base more than doubled to over 150 million developers, and Copilot grew to 20 million users.

The move ends GitHub’s run as a semi-independent unit since Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition in 2018. The reorganization comes as competition heats up in the AI coding market. Cursor, Replit, and Windsurf are gaining traction, with a Stack Overflow survey showing roughly 18% of respondents said they were depending on Cursor. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said last month that Copilot Enterprise customers grew 75% quarter over quarter, but the competitive landscape is shifting fast.
