Claude can now create and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files directly in chat

Anthropic gives Claude a private code-writing environment to produce finished documents, moving the assistant from giving advice to delivering ready-to-use files.

Anthropic today announced that Claude can now create and edit Microsoft Office files and PDFs directly inside Claude.ai and the desktop app. Users describe what they need or upload data, and Claude returns ready-to-use Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, PowerPoint decks, and PDFs — complete with working formulas, multiple sheets, and charts.

The feature works through a private, sandboxed computer environment where Claude writes and runs its own code to build the files, similar to the code interpreter approach used by other assistants. It is rolling out first as a preview to Max, Team, and Enterprise plan users; Pro users will gain access in the coming weeks. To enable the feature, users must turn on “Upgraded file creation and analysis” under Settings > Features > Experimental.

Anthropic warns that because the feature gives Claude internet access to install packages from public sources like npm or PyPI, there are risks: manipulated files or websites could trick Claude into running unsafe code or leaking sensitive data from prompts, projects, or connected services like Google Drive. The company advises monitoring sessions closely. The move positions Claude as a direct producer of finished business deliverables rather than just a conversational advisor — and puts a general-purpose code interpreter inside the consumer product, with the security tradeoffs that entails.

One year later — open only if you can handle spoilers

Anthropic moved the feature to general availability for paid plans on October 21, 2025, adding network and egress controls to mitigate the data-leakage risk it had flagged at launch. It arrived as part of Anthropic's broader autumn-2025 agentic push — alongside Claude Skills and expanded code execution — and comparable document-generation features spread across rival assistants over the following year.
