OpenAI opens ChatGPT to third-party apps with new Apps SDK, unveils AgentKit and GPT-5 Pro in API
At DevDay in San Francisco, OpenAI turns ChatGPT into a platform — letting Booking.com, Canva, Spotify and others build directly into its 800 million weekly users' conversations, and giving developers a full toolkit to ship agents.

OpenAI used its annual DevDay in San Francisco on Monday to put third-party applications directly inside ChatGPT. Users can now summon Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva by name in a conversation, and the Apps SDK preview lets developers build interactive, adaptive apps that render inside the chatbot’s responses. The system is built on the Model Context Protocol, and OpenAI says apps such as DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, and AllTrails are coming.
Alongside the apps push, OpenAI launched AgentKit — a set of building blocks for taking agents from prototype to production, including a visual Agent Builder, embeddable ChatKit, evals for agents, and a connector registry. The company also put GPT-5 Pro and Sora 2 into the API, and made its Codex software engineering agent generally available. OpenAI’s Christina Huang built an AI workflow and two AI agents live onstage in under eight minutes.
Altman opened with scale numbers: 800 million weekly ChatGPT users, up from 700 million last month, 4 million developers, and 8 billion tokens processed per minute via the API. He closed the day in conversation with Jony Ive, whose AI devices startup io OpenAI agreed to buy for about $6.4 billion in May.
What lingered afterward was the economics of attention. Altman called the market’s reaction to DevDay mentions strange, and COO Brad Lightcap said the company is still figuring out how to engage with partners.

The apps push became a formal platform: OpenAI opened app submissions and an in-ChatGPT app directory in December 2025, with the first approved apps slated for early 2026. ChatGPT's audience kept climbing, to 900 million weekly users by February 2026.
